Plough Share Mixer

Plough Share mixers operate on the concept of a fluid bed with three-dimensional product movement that is mechanically generated. The mixer consists of a cylindrical mixing vessel containing plough or paddle shaped mixing elements mounted on a horizontal shaft installed along the central axis of the mixing vessel. The mixing elements are designed to lift and separate the product within the vessel. The number of ploughs / paddles, their spacing, and the speed of rotation all contribute to degree of fluidization. Plough Share mixer provides intense mixing within short mixing times.

A drive system comprising of a motor, gearbox and couplings drives the plough shaft. A sealing arrangement is provided for the area where the shaft exits the container to ensure that material does not travel from the container to the outside and vice versa. For injecting liquid into the material, liquid spray systems can be provided. For applications requiring lumps to be broken down or when the mixer is to be used for wet granulation, plough mixers can be fitted with high-speed chopper units. In the lower portion of the mixing vessel, single or multiple choppers are mounted. It is popular to use the tulip-shaped chopper and x-mass tree chopper variants.

Materials are charged through nozzles located at the top of the cylindrical mixing vessel. The working volume ranges from 30 percent to 70 percent of the total vessel volume. The agitator shaft rotates at high peripheral speeds of more than 200 metres per minute to produce a whirling, three-dimensional fluidized product movement. The turbulence and material movement within the mixer vessel prevents formation of dead-spots or low-movement zones and ensures intense and hom*ogenous mixing in short time.

The material is discharged through a discharge nozzle located at the lower end of the container after completion of mixing. In order to prevent any dead pockets inside the mixer, flush bottom discharge valves are recommended. These valves can be operated manually, pneumatically or hydraulically. For cleaning and inspection access, wide hinged side doors are provided. Plough mixers provide excellent solutions for mixing materials like powders, powders with liquids, heavy pastes and putties. In a short period of time, hom*ogeneous mixing of materials of different densities, flow properties, particle sizes and structures is achieved. It is possible to combine ratios as high as 1:20,000, with 95 to 98 percent hom*ogeneity, in under 5 minutes. The plough share mixer is capable of handling up to 600,000 centipoises of viscosity. The specific power for the mixer drive generally ranges from 30 to 40 kW/m3, depending on the properties of the materials to be mixed. Plough mixers can be built to operate in both batch and continuous modes.

FAQs

What is a plough shear mixer? ›

Ploughshare mixer – Plough Shear Mixers (also named ploughshare mixers, plow mixers, plough mixers) consists of a cylindrical drums containing plough shaped mixing & drying with mounted Horizontal shafting. It creates a mechanical products fluidized bed drying & mixing with Short times.

What is the principle of shear mixer? ›

A flowing fluid experiences shear stress, which is the driving principle of high shear mixers. Shear stress in fluids is primarily caused by friction between the fluid molecules due to viscosity. Friction between fluids and a moving body also creates shear stress.

What is an example of a high shear mixer? ›

High-shear mixers are commonly used for emulsification in industries such as pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and food. In the pharmaceutical industry, high-shear mixers are used to produce creams, ointments, and gels. With cosmetics, they are used to produce lotions, moisturizers, and sunscreens.

What is a shear plough? ›

The term “shear” in a plough refers to the cutting edge of the plough, which is used to break up and turn over the soil. The shear is attached to the ploughshare, which is the bottom part of the plough that is designed to dig into the soil and create a furrow for planting.

What is the rpm of plough shear mixer? ›

60-80 Rpm Stainless Steel Plough Shear Blender, Capacity: 100 Lit To 2000 Lit, Model Name/Number: Pme-psm at Rs 250000 in Bhavnagar.

What is a plough tool used for? ›

A plough is one of the agricultural tools used for the initial soil cultivation in preparation for seed sowing or planting to loosen or turn the soil. It is usually made of wood and is drawn by two bulls. It has been used since ancient times for tiling, turning the soil and adding fertilizers.

Is a high shear mixer better than a hom*ogenizer? ›

The pros and cons of high shear mixing

High shear mixing often isn't as speedy as hom*ogenizing, but this processes' higher flow can accommodate a wider range of viscosities, making it a great choice for applications including paint and ink mixing and emulsions for ceramics and adhesives.

What is the simple shear theory? ›

Simple shear is a deformation in which parallel planes in a material remain parallel and maintain a constant distance, while translating relative to each other.

What is the difference between high shear and low shear mixers? ›

High-shear mixing, which generates intense shear forces and may produce heat, may not be suitable for delicate or heat-sensitive materials. In contrast, low-shear mixing is gentler and typically generates less heat, making it more appropriate for sensitive materials.

What is the power number of a high shear mixer? ›

In turbulent flow regime, the power number of high shear rotor stator mixers is constant and is in the range of 1.4 -3 for different geometries [10].

What is the speed of a high shear mixer? ›

Ultra-high shear mixers operate at higher tip speeds than conventional rotor/stators, around 11,000 - 18,000 fpm.

What is the function of a plough share? ›

A ploughshare is an iron tool used in agriculture to increase the production of crops. They are used prior to the seedling stage to loosen up the soil.

What is the share on a plow? ›

A plowshare is a steel blade that cuts the top layer of soil. It's part of a plow. A plowshare is an important part of a plow: you might call it the business end, because it's the part that does the cutting of grass and soil.

What is plough shear mixer? ›

Raj plough shear mixer is a horizontal mixer with cylindrical drum and horizontally installed mixing shaft. The mixer is designed for heavy duty blending of both dry and wet material. Plough shape shovels mounted on a central shaft with its sharp ends easily penetrate through the dense powder and thick pasty mass.

What is a plow mixer? ›

Plow mixers are a type of industrial mixer that uses a horizontal, cylindrical drum and a set of plows mounted on a shaft.

What is high shear mixer vs low shear mixer? ›

High shear, or very forceful, mixing processes uses high-speed impellers, and low shear mixing processes use flow, turbulence, and rotational force to combined miscible goods.

What are the different types of low shear mixers? ›

For low-shear mixing of free-flowing materials, the three most common mixer types are the conical screw mixer, tumble mixer, and ribbon mixer.
