C2 THE HERALD-SUN DURHAM, NORTH CAROLINA SUNDAY, AUGUST 24, 2003 ORANGE COUNTY UNC freshmen give book mixed dr reviews Some say 'Nickel and Dimed' was an eye-opening reading assignment BY GEOFFREY GRAYBEAL 918-1033 CHAPEL HILL- Most of the UNC freshmen who lugged belongings to their South Campus dorms Saturday said they didn't mind their summer reading assignment. The reading selection "Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America," by leftist social critic Barbara Ehrenreich, has angered conservatives in and around the UNC community who disagree with Ehrenreich's vocal, liberal views on working America. "I read in the paper about it being leftist, liberal and trying to corrupt our minds, but I didn't have a problem with it," said Aaron Russell, a UNC freshman from Parkersburg, W.Va., who moved into the Hinton James residence hall. For the second year in a row, a UNC summer reading selection has wrought controversy. In 2002, in the aftermath of the Sept.
11 terrorist attacks, UNC chose "Approaching the Qur'an: The Early Revelations," a scholarly introduction to Islam. The selection sparked an onslaught of criticism, and a year later, the issue has played out again on a slightly smaller scale. Earlier this summer, UNC Chancellor James Moeser met with a group of conservative legislators to discuss their concerns with Ehrenreich's book, and on a separate occasion with a group of conservative students who asked the university to open-minded about their political beliefs. "The people out there trying to stir up stuff, that's what they think and they're welcome 1 to think it," said Greg Retson, a freshman from Wilmington. "I don't think the university is trying to brainwash us.
I thought it was a great book." The book looks at the difficulties of the low-paid worker in America. Retson, a former waiter, said that college students could relate to scraping by on low-paying jobs. Retson said those who haven't worked low-wage jobs should gain a respect for what low-wage workers endure if they read the book. "I really don't look at the people at Wal-Mart the same any- Have an event you want to promote, or a promotion you want to announce? Russell and Retson considered themselves slightly liberal, but their friend Chris Harrison, a freshman from Wilmington, said he was slightly conservative in his political views. "I thought was pretty interesting," Harrison said.
"It kind of got monotonous after a while. It was saying the same things over and over, but it opens In Loving Memory of Ethel T.Hester your mind a little bit to what people experience out there." Some low-wage UNC workers claimed UNC's summer reading book choice was a cruelly ironic selection given the financial plight of SO many campus employees. In response to their concerns, campus administrators created a task force to examine ways to improve the workplace environment. "A lot of the poor people in this country aren't poor because they want to be," said Laura Houenou, a UNC freshman from WinstonSalem who moved into HintonJames. Houenou said the summer reading selection exposed her to the need to overhaul the health care system and other plights of low-wage workers.
